Dress for success—and comfort
Whether rain or shine, or something in between, choosing appropriate clothing when you have psoriasis can be a challenge. Certain wardrobe options and techniques might help you feel comfortable—wherever you go.
- If you are experiencing a flare-up and feel more comfortable covering up, dress in long sleeves, pants, or turtlenecks.
- Choose lighter colours and patterns to make flakes less noticeable.
- Layering may help reduce perspiration and regulate your body temperature to prevent overheating in winter. Layer a soft cotton T-shirt under sweaters, shirts, and jackets to keep moisture away from your skin.
- Look for blended natural fabrics that breathe and can keep irritation of your psoriasis to a minimum by reducing chafing.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing to maximize airflow and minimize perspiration.
- For women, pair skirts with opaque tights and knee-high boots for a stylish alternative to pants.
- For men, select boxers made of soft cotton or natural silk rather than briefs.
Here's a fashion cheat sheet everyone can use:
- Wearing the same colour head to toe in a clean, unbroken line will make you look slimmer.
- Vertical patterns make you look taller and thinner.
- The darker the background on a print, the slimmer you'll look.
- A slim v-neck makes the neck appear longer, which may be flattering.
- Wear a collared shirt to frame your face and give your torso the appearance of being a few extra inches longer.
- Bigger, bolder patterns make you look bigger.
- Horizontal patterns make you look wider.
- Pant cuffs make short legs look shorter.
