Shampoos

Hair care and plaque psoriasis on the scalp

If you have plaque psoriasis on your scalp, you've probably tried every shampoo recommended by your dermatologist. Maybe you've even attempted some "home remedies." How can you tell if something will work for you before you try it? The truth is you can't. But you can learn more about which shampoos might be more likely than others to help.

Some of the more popular options for people with plaque psoriasis on the scalp include products made with coal tar or salicylic acid, both of which are known for their exfoliating properties. Be aware that these ingredients may stain light-coloured hair. To reduce the smell of tar shampoos and/or avoid becoming resistant to treatment, some dermatologists may combine or rotate treatments with other medicated or cosmetic shampoos and conditioners. And be sure to condition every time you wash. This can help improve the appearance and manageability of hair.

Of course, make sure you talk with your dermatologist about your psoriasis before changing your hair care regimen.
