Psoriasis and weight gain

Is there a link between psoriasis and weight gain?

Although no direct link between psoriasis and weight gain has been proven, it has been observed that people who are overweight are more likely to have psoriasis. It's unclear whether it's a sedentary lifestyle or the condition itself that causes people to be overweight. Regardless of the reason, maintaining a healthy weight may help reduce your risk of several conditions, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Motivation that makes healthy sense

The good news is there is something you can do to help reduce your risk–lose the weight. Talk to your doctor to determine what is a healthy weight for you and make that your goal. To reach your goal weight safely, follow these few suggestions:

  • Don't try to lose it all at once. Gradual weight loss is easier and safer. Try to lose one to two pounds a week.
  • Revamp your diet. Ask your doctor or nutritionist about how to reduce the amount of calories you consume in one day, depending on how much you are already eating.
  • Consult with your doctor about starting an exercise program and aim to increase the amount of calories you expend in a day.
  • Try to avoid fad diets. They may pose a risk to your health and are not recommended for long-term weight loss.
  • Whether you're eating less or exercising more, talk to your doctor to find out what is appropriate for you.
