Psoriasis changes you physically, but it can also affect how you live your life emotionally, psychologically, and socially.

Beyond the physical

Psoriasis can influence emotions

Understanding and accepting that psoriasis is more than plaques on your skin can help improve your total well-being. You know better than anyone that the effects of psoriasis aren't confined to your body. Sure, it changes you physically, but it can also affect how you live your life emotionally, psychologically, and socially

In fact, you may not even realize all the ways your psoriasis impacts your emotional health. Relationships, careers and self-worth can be negatively affected if your emotional responses are not addressed. The way you recognize and respond to your emotions may determine how successfully you cope with having psoriasis.

Take control of your feelings

The inconvenience and unpredictability of psoriasis can take its toll on your emotions and the emotions of those around you. You may end up feeling stressed, embarrassed, or frustrated, which can make it difficult to enjoy social situations, and may even make your condition worse. Here are a few suggestions that may help you keep this from happening:

  • Acknowledge your feelings. It's natural to feel angry, or frustrated. You have a skin condition that is difficult to control. It's okay to acknowledge this and the way it makes you feel.
  • Talk to a friend, family member, or counsellor. It's important to have someone who will listen and validate your feelings. A sympathetic ear and a little support may do wonders.
  • Educate yourself. Learn about the potential causes of psoriasis and how to explain it to others. You can start by telling people that it's not a contagious disease; it's a skin condition that can occur at any time and to any one. Help them understand – instead of wonder – what is happening to you.
  • Take a proactive approach to treatment. Know what your options are and keep exploring treatments until you find one that works for you.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help. Talk to a healthcare professional about your concerns and feelings.
